California has the most progressive state income tax in the US. We compute what $60k to $250k really leaves, and how far it falls behind Texas.
California has the most progressive state income tax in the United States, and at most salary levels it is the most expensive. A wage earner in California pays federal income tax and FICA like everyone else, then adds a state income tax that climbs through nine brackets, plus a state disability contribution that has had no wage ceiling since 2024.
The result is visible in the numbers. On a $100,000 salary our engine puts California take-home pay at $72,672 — an effective rate of 27.3% once federal tax, FICA and the state's own charges are counted. The same salary in Texas, which has no wage tax, leaves $79,180.
| Gross salary | California state tax | State disability (SDI) | Total tax incl. federal | Effective rate | || $60,000 | $1,793 | $780 | $12,183 | 20.3% | | $75,000 | $2,928 | $975 | $17,310 | 23.1% | | $100,000 | $5,208 | $1,300 | $27,328 | 27.3% | | $150,000 | $9,858 | $1,950 | $48,017 | 32.0% | | $200,000 | $14,508 | $2,600 | $68,181 | 34.1% | | $250,000 | $19,158 | $3,250 | $89,226 | 35.7% |
Two separate state charges appear in that table, and they work differently. The state income tax is progressive: it climbs through nine brackets as income rises. State disability insurance is flat, and since 2024 it has applied to all wages with no ceiling — the old cap that used to stop SDI partway through the year was removed.
| Gross salary | California net | Texas net | California pays more than Texas | New York net | || $60,000 | $47,817 | $50,390 | $-2,573 | $47,695 | | $100,000 | $72,672 | $79,180 | $-6,508 | $74,228 | | $200,000 | $131,819 | $148,927 | $-17,108 | $137,407 |
At $100,000 California take-home pay is $72,672 against $79,180 in Texas — a difference of $6,508 a year. At $200,000 it is $17,108. California and New York are much closer to each other than either is to a no-tax state, with California the higher of the two across this range.
The structure is what makes California expensive at the top end rather than the bottom. The lowest brackets are modest, which is why a $60,000 salary in California carries a much smaller state tax than a $200,000 one — the state tax line goes from $1,793 to $14,508 across that range.
That is the same progressive shape every state income tax has, but California's top rates are the highest of the large states, with a further surcharge applied to income above one million dollars. The practical effect for a salary earner is that the state tax line grows faster than pay does as income rises, so the effective rate keeps climbing.
Our calculators model state income tax and state disability insurance. They do not model everything a California resident pays, and the omissions matter.
Local taxes. Some California cities and counties levy their own taxes, which are not modelled here.
Cost of living. Housing in the state's major metropolitan areas is the largest single line in most household budgets, and no tax calculator captures it.
Property tax. California property tax is levied at the county level on assessed value. It is not part of this calculation.
Comparing states on income tax alone is therefore incomplete in both directions: California costs more in income tax than the figures alone suggest once cost of living is added, but the income tax comparison itself is accurate and reproducible.
The numbers on this page come from the same engine that runs our calculators, so the California salary calculator will reproduce them exactly for any salary, and shows the federal, state and SDI layers separately.
Every rate behind them is traced to an official source. Our methodology lists the body that publishes each market's rates and the date our figures were last compared against it, and each calculator page names its source directly alongside the date of the last check.
Does California have a state income tax? Yes. California levies a progressive state income tax with nine brackets, and applies a further surcharge to income above one million dollars.
What is SDI in California? State Disability Insurance is a payroll contribution deducted from wages. Since 2024 there has been no wage ceiling on it, so it applies to all salary rather than stopping partway through the year.
How much tax is taken from $100,000 in California? Our engine produces a total of $27,328 on a $100,000 salary, including $13,170 of federal income tax, $5,208 of state income tax, $1,300 of SDI, and $7,650 of Social Security and Medicare. Net pay is $72,672.
Is California the highest-tax state? Among the large states it is the most expensive on income tax across the salary range in the table above. Oregon is higher at some levels, and a small number of states with no income tax at all are the cheapest.
How much more tax does California pay than Texas? At $60,000 the difference is $2,573 a year, at $100,000 it is $6,508, and at $200,000 it is $17,108. Texas levies no state income tax on wages.
Should I move to a no-tax state to save on tax? The income tax saving is real and measurable — the table above quantifies it. Whether it is worth moving depends on housing cost, property tax, sales tax and the job market in the destination, none of which a tax calculator can answer. Our nine no-tax states guide covers that comparison properly.
